How Dry Ice Blasting Works

A controlled, non-abrasive blasting process that removes contamination without water, chemicals, or secondary media. Suited to industrial maintenance, electrical infrastructure, food production environments, and specialist restoration work.

The Process

CO₂ Pellets Loaded

Solid dry ice pellets (frozen CO₂) are loaded into the blasting equipment. These pellets are about the size of rice grains.

Compressed Air Acceleration

Compressed air accelerates the pellets to high velocity, similar to sandblasting but without the abrasive media.

Impact and Sublimation

On impact, the dry ice pellets sublimate instantly—transforming from solid CO₂ to gas. This lifts and dislodges contamination.

Clean Surface Remains

The contamination is removed. The dry ice becomes harmless CO₂ gas. No blasting media waste — only loosened residue needs collection.

  • Minimal dismantling is preferred.
  • Contamination includes grease, oil, carbon, dust or production residue.
  • Sensitive equipment or critical infrastructure requires a controlled, non-abrasive process.

✘ Dry ice blasting may not be the right solution on its own when:

  • Very soft or unstable substrates are present.
  • The project requires heavy corrosion removal or structural material removal.
  • The project requires additional chemical treatment, specialist surface preparation or protective coating systems as part of the overall solution.
  • Substrate condition cannot be confirmed without further assessment.
